Today marks the start of the Christmas season. Simbang Gabi or Evening Mass starts today, December 16 and ends on December 24. This mass usually starts at 4 in the morning and another at 5. The last day of the mass is called Misa de Gallo. This is one of the Filipino traditions that a lot of our Catholic brothers and sisters follow. I remember when I was younger, the family would religiously attend the 5am mass, have some hot chocolate and puto bumbong or bibingka after. I have to be honest though, I have not completed this 9-day novena mass even up to this day. As I grew older, the mass I'd attend to would just be on the 7th
day, December 22, which happens to be my birthday. Yipee!

my simbang gabi experience makes me remember my simbang gabi dates with my lola.
ReplyDeletethen later, when she moved to australia, i was left alone to attend it because i was part of the choir. rehearsing for the mass at 3:30am is a big challenge in opening up my vocal chords and diaphragm so early in the morning. but it was one of the funnest times of my teenage life. :)
